Equipment Checklist

This educational guide covers the essential equipment for riding safely in Niseko and in mountain environments worldwide. From piste basics to off-piste gear and mandatory equipment for gate-access terrain, this page helps you prepare for a safer and more enjoyable day on the snow.

<<Good equipment doesn’t replace skill or judgment — but it gives you the margin you need on the mountain.>>

Piste Essentials

Helmet

Always recommended. Protects the most important part of your body against impacts and tree branches in low visibility.

Goggles

Use a low-light lens for Niseko’s common cloudy days. Carry a clear or yellow lens for storms.

Gloves & Layers

Waterproof gloves and proper layering (base, mid, shell) are key for long cold days.

Board / Skis

Choose equipment appropriate for the conditions — wider boards or all‑mountain skis help on deep days.

Other Essentials

Charged phone, resort map, hydration, small snacks and hand warmers.

Powder & Off-Piste Essentials

Wider board/skis: Help maintain float in deep Japanese powder.

Backpack: To carry water, extra layers, tools and safety gear.

Extra mid-layer: Conditions can change rapidly in Niseko.

Repair kit (optional): Small multi-tool, ski straps, or spare screws.

Radio (optional but recommended): Useful for group communication in trees or poor visibility. (In Japan, only radios with the MIC “Giteki Mark” certification are legal; foreign-frequency devices (e.g., PMR446) are prohibited)

Gate & Backcountry Mandatory Gear

For Niseko’s official gate system and any terrain outside the resort’s controlled areas, the following equipment is mandatory:

Beacon

Used to locate buried partners and be located. Must be worn on your body (center of your chest), not in a backpack.

Shovel

Essential for digging out buried riders. Metal shovels only — plastic is lighter, but weak. A broken shovel doesn’t work.

Probe

Used to pinpoint a buried person’s location before digging. A critical rescue tool. Minimal lenght: 240 cm

*Carrying this gear is not enough—you must also know how to use it. In these situations, time is critical, so practice makes perfect.

Optional but Useful Items

  • Extra bateries (Never use rechargeable batteries)
  • First-aid mini kit
  • Extra gloves
  • Anti-fog cloth / lens cleaner
  • Ski straps or board retention straps
  • Small powerbank
  • Thermal blanket
  • Sunscreen

Checklist Before You Ride

  • Weather checked.
  • Snowpack / avalanche bulletin reviewed.
  • Gate status checked (if applicable).
  • Beacon battery full (if using one).
  • Phone fully charged.
  • Clear or low-light goggles packed.
  • Proper layers for storm conditions.

*This educational checklist is a general guide. Conditions change quickly in Niseko, and proper training and judgment are essential when travelling off-piste or near avalanche terrain.
